Audio interconnection 01
Introduction

Level of challenge Easy

Welcome to this series of tutorial videos on audio interconnection.

In the recording studio, the sheer variety of interconnection technologies can be overwhealming. There are so many different types of leads and sockets, and often a device will have several interconnection options. Not only do you have to figuer out how the connections work, but which is best. Even experienced sound engineers may not know the theory aspects of all the interconnects they use. But sometimes it's not necessary to know all the details.

The tutorials in this series provide a comprehensive overview of everything the serious home and project studio owner needs to know about audio interconnection. We will attempt to demystify the subject, present essential theory where necessary, and give straightforward practical advice.

Caption - What's the required level of kowledge?

Each tutorial covers one subject. The level of required knowledge was determined by asking “what does the average project or home studio owner need to know to effectively operate their studio”. So if you are an electronics engineer, you may find the theory and language too general for your needs.

Incidentally, where-ever possible, we have avoided the technical vocabulary professional sound engineers use. For example, when talking about amplitude we will mostly use terms such as quiet, loud, and strong, rather than quoting decibels.

Some tutorials in this series are short, like this one, whilst others require longer explanations. You can progress through the tutorials in a linear fashion or jump to an area of interest.

Caption - What will we learn?

During these tutorials you will learn ..

  • the technical theory of signals types and leads
  • how to choose the right leads to ensure you get great sound and don’t damage your equipment
  • how to connect devices together
  • and how to make leads
